Starting gate/stall or Pruett gate

Aficionado
A racing fan/habitue

Apprentice
An inexperienced rider granted weight allowance.

Apprentice Allowance
Weight reduction permitted on horses riden by apprentices in races other than stakes and handicaps.

Ayuda
Full exertion, usually under whipping.

Backstretch
Straight part of track opposite homestretch; stable area.

Bandera
Lead or front in a race.

Banderista
A front runner or a horse with early speed; a horse that prefers to run in front rather than come from behind.

Banig
To bet on every possible daily double, forecast (exacta), quinella, trifecta or other multiple wagering proportion. Also called buying the rack.

Barrier
A trial race.

Benta
Total gross sales of a particular wagering event.

Bentanilla
The betting window.

Bisiro
A yearling (year-old) horse.

Bitaw
Refers to the moment when a jockey lets loose of his mount.

Blanket Finish
A close finish.

Break in
Teaching a young horse to accept saddle, bridle, and rider.

Breakage
Money subtracted from proper mutuel payoffs to leave rounded mounts paid to holders of winning tickets.

Bulusok
To rally or let loose.

Bumalya
Where a horse races towards the rail despite rider’s efforts to maintain straight course.

Bumuka
To run wide; when a horse races diagonally away from the rail instead of a straight path.
