Salida
The break or the start of the race.

Saludo
Customary salute of the jockey to the stewards by raising the whip after the race, seeking permission to dismount.

Scratch
A declared horse withdrawn in a particular race.

Sex Allowance
Weight concession to female in race against males.

Siete-octavo
Seven-eighths of a mile, or 1,000 meters.

Sota
Stablehand who walks the horses while they cool down.

Sota-mayor
The chief stablehand.

Stud
A stallion or breeding farm.

Stud Book
Official Thoroughbred registry; a stallion’s mating schedule.

Stud Fee
Payment by breeder to owner of stallion for its services.

Subaybayan
A horse to watch for in future races.

Sukat
The height of the horse; distance from ground to top of withers, usually measured in hands.

Super Six a type of bet
Select six horses to finish first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the correct order in a race nominated by the Club.

Suspendido
A suspended or grounded jockey/horse due to an infraction of the rule book.

Sweepstakes
A stakes race; the richest maiden races.

The infield or the area within the inner perimeter of the track.

Taob ang Labangan
A good horse or an enthusiastic eater.

Taya
A bet or a wager.

Tayaan
To bet on a particular horse/entry.

Timbang
The impost or the handicap weight assigned; weight carried by a horse in a race.

Timbangan
Finish in the money or the top three placing.

Tiyempista
Clockers; time keepers; handicapper

Totalisador
The totalizator or odds board; automatic pari-mutuel machinery that records bets as they are made and calculates odds.

Tres-octavo
Three-eighths of a mile or 600 meter.

Tres-quatro
Three-fourths of a mile or 1,200 meters.

Trial
A preparatory race; a workout in which horse is asked for top speed.

Trifecta a type of bet
Select three horses to finish first, second and third in the correct order in a race.

Triple Crown
Mythical award to three-year-old horses that win the richest and most coveted race series of the year, which usually runs from May to July.

Tumimbang
To weigh-in or two weigh-out.
